narodni trida, post-rock improvisational band, 2005

2005

Saturday December 3rd

Narodni Trio at Robannas. Miked up and recorded with PC's fancy new laptop and audio interface. Even with just the trio, a fearsome noise was unleashed and some abstract flurries evolved. A good variety of sweetness and dissonance over the session.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Laurence Saunders.

Saturday October 15th

Narodni Trida session at the home, nay cathedral, of the West Midlands' Local Rock Scene, Robannas. Unfortunately positioned as we were, next to some kind of sewage outlet, the original line-up managed to unleash some great pieces over four hours, despite the creeping stench of putrefaction.

Fully miked-up and recorded, expect the fruits to appear as a CD in the new year.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Ian Mottashed, Laurence Saunders.

Saturday October 8th

Keyboards and Reason-based session in Birmingham.

Present: Paul Carroll, Laurence Saunders.

Saturday July 30th

Narodni Trio session at the gimp sheds in rural Cambridge. Hot and dark conditions are reflected in some dense and aggressive pieces. Prepared pieces by the not-present Laurence are improvised over by those actually in the room.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Ian Mottashed.

Saturday June 25th

Lots of hard work, poring over a couple of pieces again and again this time. Not so much of the open-ended abstractions today apart from a lovely fifteen-minute piece which I'll put on the home page.

Our Hungarian friend Marte added some expert bluesy guitar to a new piece that Munka named 'Kelj Fel!' - it's double-meaning Hungarian for 'rise up'. Nicely apt. His style and sweet jazz chords led us into some different musical shapes. A nice workout.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Laurence Saunders, Marte and Munka (our Hungarian friends).

Saturday May 14th

Plenty of open-ended and almost abstract pieces take 'shape' as we concentrate of providing moods and textures for our film soundtrack work. It's pedals to the fore as the sound is often smeared out of the instruments with washes of bass augmented by expressive drumming and edgy guitars. One piece in particular features a solemn, stately bass figure with dry-as-a-desert-plain slide guitar - luckily it proves to be more than just a small good thing...

The other main innovation is the use of a roving microphone to dub up individual instruments through the studio's PA with PC taking the role of Dub Professor. Proceedings are wrapped with a thunderous version of Motorik.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Laurence Saunders, Phil Wyatt.

Saturday April 9th

Movements in a free-er direction birth some fluid creations as well as readings of the 'dusty backroads americana' track that has been refined over the course of three sessions and some Reason email exchanges. We also worked through a droney, bass-led demo that was passed around as an MP3 in the weeks before the session. Promising. Will upload some of the rough mixes to the MP3s page in due course.

Any latent feelings of debauchery or rock-band-itis were instantly dispelled by the appearance of The Narodni Trida Kettle and the drinking of herbal teas. Excitingly, Nove Disko delivered on their promise of t-shirts too. These are available, I think, if you send them an email. We should both sort out some kind of Paypal thing, I guess.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Ian Mottashed, Laurence Saunders, Phil Wyatt.

Saturday March 19th

Session at the world famous Oxygen Rooms in Birmingham. Ran through some of ideas from the January session and extemporised around some dubbier basslines.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Ian Mottashed, Daniel Saunders, Laurence Saunders.

Sunday January 23rd

Narodni Trida in session, 23/01/2005 at the Oxygen Rooms, Birmingham, UKSession at the Oxygen Rooms in Birmingham. The rather cold edge to the day is reflected in some really crisp improvisations and moody takes on 'Motorik' and the demo from October. Semi-acoustic guitar is added to the sound by Daniel Saunders and the new cello-effect guitar was unleashed. The session was recorded and some tracks will appear on the mp3s page shortly.

Present: Paul Carroll, Stephen Morris, Ian Mottashed, Daniel Saunders, Laurence Saunders.
