Yes, other bands exist...

It's a great time for music, much of it being produced independently and self-sufficiently, away from the patronage of the major labels and taste-makers. Below is a selection of bands who we think are producing amazing music that you may well enjoy.

In the influences section are a few bands and artists who have been an influence on one or more of us. Like any band, different individuals bring different influences to Narodni Trida. I don't think there's one band that everyone likes, but all are worth your time and ears.

The Necks

The Necks are an Australian three-piece who create shimmering, evolving music. Their CDs generally contain single hour-long pieces that unravel almost imperceptibly but right there in front of you like autumn turning to winter turning to spring in a time-lapse film.

Piano, bass, drums with occasional sampling and loops are the materials used but they can go off in wildly different directions. 'Hanging Garden' is a particularly amazing album (and my introduction to the band) but their soundtrack to the Australian film 'The Boys' is excellent too with the double set 'See Through/Mosquito' showcasing a more spartan, ambient direction. An absolutely vital band. (SM)

65 Days of Static

This Sheffield band have just released their debut album and a great EP ('Retreat! Retreat!') and derive a wonderfully dynamic and precise form of edgy rock music from guitar, bass, drums and machines. (SM)

Explosions In The Sky

Texan instrumental mood rockers that are starting to get some recognition here since their most recent album was released on Bella Union. A deceptively simple set up of bass, drums and two guitars, Explosions produce a wonderful, expansive sound that unfolds slowly before hitting an overdrive of thundering drums and controlled noise. They kick ass live too. (SM)

Naciente Quartet

A London-based band that create angular, yet irresistably flowing instrumentals. A thrilling combination of beautifully structured bass and drums, topped by chiming guitars, Naciente Quartet's CDs and live performances suggest a unique place where The Michael Nyman Band meet A Certain Ratio, especially on the wonderful 'Chat D'Amour'.
